Alma Elizabeth Burris McGaha Thompson, 90
CONCORD - Alma Elizabeth Burris McGaha Thompson, of 3575 Poplar Tent Road, died Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at CMC-NorthEast. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Hartsell Funeral Home, Concord. The graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Oakwood Cemetery, with Ken Sloop and Sheldon Burdick presiding. The family is meeting at the home.

Mrs. Thompson was born Sept. 11, 1917, in Cabarrus County. She worked as a wash cloth cutter at Cannon Mills. She was a member of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church. She is survived by son, John Edward "Ed" McGaha and wife, Pat Freeman McGaha, of Concord; and grandson, Travis McGaha and wife, Elena, of Concord. She was preceded in death by first husband, Lloyd McGaha; second husband, Opel Leon "Pete" Thompson; father, John Travis Burris; mother, Fannie Zorville Burris; brothers, James C. "Bud" Burris, Gene Burris, Marvin Burris and Robert Morris Burris; sisters, Dessie Mae Furr, Thelma Deal, Madie "Mick" Ennis and Nancy Coley. Memorials can be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, N.C. 28081. Hartsell Funeral Home, Concord is serving the family.


Mr. Donald Lee "Pete" Medlin, 66
CHINA GROVE - Mr. Donald Lee "Pete" Medlin, passed away Monday, May 12, 2008, at his residence, surrounded by his family. Mr. Medlin was born on July 30, 1941, in Rowan County, a son of the late Claude Herman and Gussie Inez Williams Medlin. Pete was educated at A.L. Brown High School and was an electrician, having worked with Delta Electric, Coastal Electric, and Bryant Electric, before his retirement. Preceding him in death in addition to his parents was a sister, Priscilla Medlin Horne, who died in l987. Survivors include a daughter, Angelia Moore; brother, Bob Medlin of Rockwell; two sisters, June M. Hartsoe of China Grove and Claudette M. Craig of Salisbury; one grandson, Jonathan Gulledge; and two great-grandsons.

Graveside inurnment service will take place on Friday at 11 a.m., officiated by Hospice Chaplain, the Rev. Fred Morrisette and the Rev. Buddy Hoffner, at the West Concord Cemetery on Union Cemetery St., Concord. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the residence of Mrs. June M. Hartsoe, 102 Rutledge St., China Grove. Evergreen Cremation Services of Salisbury is assisting the Medlin Family.


Ms. Eliza Lyles Roseboro, 97
HUNTERSVILLE - Ms. Eliza Lyles Roseboro, of 17309 Huntersville-Concord Road, died Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at Presbyterian Hospital/Huntersville. The service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at New Zion Baptist Church in Charlotte, with the Rev. Henry Williams Jr. officiating. Interment will be at Beaties Ford Memorial Garden in Charlotte.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Ms. Roseboro was born Aug. 25, 1911, in Richland County, S.C., to the late George and Teresa Lyles. She is survived by daughters, Deborah Jones of the home and Mattie Mahatha of Charlotte; and son, Robert Roseboro of Huntersville. She had 70 grandchildren, 131 great- grandchildren and 74 great- great-grandchildren:. She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Roseboro; four daughters, Frances Logan, Doretha Forney, Lula Bell Mahatha and Martha Jones; and four sons, George Roseboro, Daniel Roseboro, James Roseboro and Charles Roseboro Clark Funeral Home Inc. is serving the Roseboro Family.


Robbie Orth, 71
KANNAPOLIS - Robbie Orth, died Monday, May 11, 2008. He was born in Chicago, Ill., on Dec. 5, 1936, and was the son of the late Robert and Dixie Orth. Mr. Orth had lived at the First Assembly Living Center since 1988. Robbie was a helper to many. He loved his family, friends and his Lord. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Gregg and Judy "Mom" Orth of Charlotte; as well as nieces, Terry Lynn Revels and Christen Carol Orth.

A graveside service will take place on Friday, May 16, at 2 p.m. at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, with the Rev. Forrest Jones officiating. Carolina Funeral Service & Cremation is entrusted with the arrangements.


Mildred Lorene Swink Triece
Mildred Lorene Swink Triece, formerly of Kannapolis, died Thursday, May 15, 2008, at the home of her son, Dan Triece, 1228 N.C. 705, Seagrove, with whom she resided for the past four years. She was in declining health for four years and seriously ill for four months. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday at Center Grove Lutheran Church. The Rev. Diane Wales and the Rev. Matthew Miller will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the church. At other times, they will make headquarters at the home of her daughter, Sharon Triece Vanpelt, 6971 Tuckaseegee Road, Kannapolis.

Born June 14, 1927, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Willis Franklin Swink and Mary Melinda Swicegood Swink. Mildred was a certified church musician in the Lutheran Church of America. She served for 40 years as an organist and choir director at several churches, including St. Enoch Lutheran Church, Center Grove Lutheran Church, Trinity Lutheran Church in Landis and Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church. She was instrumental in introducing handbell music into this area. After retiring from service to the church, she enjoyed sharing her love of flowers and gardening through her work at Mills Garden Center in Kannapolis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ray "Buck" Triece; and four brothers, Lester Swink, Dick Swink, Carl Swink and Harvey Swink. She is survived by her family, Dan Triece and Jim Carraher; Sharon, Harry, Ben and David Vanpelt; Lois and Dick Eagle; Doris and Harold Childers; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gladys Grass Starnes, 74
KANNAPOLIS - Gladys Grass Starnes, of Kannapolis, formerly of Oak Island, passed away Friday, May 16, 2008, at CMC-NorthEast following a period of declining health. The family will receive friends Sunday, May 18, 2008, from 2-3 p.m. at Whitley's Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 18, 2008, at 3 p.m. at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Dave Cash will preside over the ceremony. A private entombment ceremony will follow the services. Gladys was born July 28, 1933, in Cabarrus County, to the late Avery Jackson Grass and the late Inez Burris Grass. Gladys was a graduate of J.W. Cannon High School and worked for the Charlotte and Salisbury offices of Bell South until her retirement. She was a member of Midway United Methodist Church, Women of the Moose of Oak Island Lodge and a was former member of the Ladies' Auxiliary. Gladys was a longtime den mother for the Cub Scouts Pack 007 at Midway United Methodist Church. She enjoyed the beach, collecting shells and traveling across the United States after she and her late husband retired. Gladys was preceded in death by her late husband, Billy Eugene Starnes, who died Dec. 9, 2000. She is survived her sons, Scott Starnes and wife, Gina, of Salisbury, Greg Starnes and wife, Leslie, of Concord and Todd Starnes and wife, Tonya, of Kannapolis; sister, Audrey Purser and husband, Jerry, of Wagram; and brother, James Grass and wife, Phyllis, of Concord. She is also survived by nine grandchildren. The family will meet at the home of son, Greg Starnes, at 420 Summit Court S.E., Concord.

Malcom S. Reaves, 80
CHINA GROVE - Malcom S. Reaves, of 255 Pamela St., passed away Wednesday at Liberty Commons Nursing Center in China Grove after two years of declining health. The family will receive friends Saturday, May 17, 2008, from 1-2 p.m. at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Salisbury. Funeral services will be held after the receiving of friends at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Interment will take place at the church's cemetery. The Rev. Maurice Staley and The Rev. Bruce Sheeks will preside over the ceremony. Malcom was born March 21, 1928, in Wake County, to the late Jesse Reaves and the late Mary Lillian Eason Reaves. Malcom was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church for 40 years and a member of the church council. He was also a Sunday school teacher as well as a youth group leader. He retired in 1985 from Fieldcrest Cannon after 33 years of service. He also served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. Malcom is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carolyn Harris Reaves of the home; sons, Jeff Reaves of Plano, Texas, Mark Reaves of China Grove and Steven Reaves of Wilson; grandsons, Matthew, Andrew, Jesse and Patrick Reaves; and great-grandchildren Andrew Jr. and Chanler.

Mr. Raymond Lee Parks, 84
Mr. Raymond Lee Parks, of Wright Road, Kannapolis, died Thursday, May 15, 2008, at his home. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethpage Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Darryl Baker will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1-1:45 p.m. Sunday in the fellowship hall at the church. At other times, they will be at the residence. Born August 18, 1923, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late H. Glenn Parks and Eula Freeze Parks. He retired from the machine shop of Cannon Mills, Plant 4. Raymond was a member of Bethpage Presbyterian Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Terry Parks; and two brothers, Bennett Parks and Hugh Parks. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Smith Parks; a daughter, Rhonda Jones and husband, Patrick, of Kannapolis; three brothers, Arnold Parks, Harold Parks and Kermit Parks, all of Kannapolis; and two granddaughters, Heather Jones and Lisa Jones.
